Barrel Cactus
One of my favorite places is the Mohave National Preserve where alluvial fans are covered with all sorts of cactus. Desert vistas are pretty intense, and that's what I was thinking about as I pieced together this desert scene. Low fire paper clay and glazes. About 10" wide.

There's a lot of process involved here, from tossing a piece of clay onto a table to flatten it, then pressing in some lace to get texture happening, manipulating the clay by hand to give it shape, firing it, painting it, then working with a piece of wool fabric until the fabric begins to mimic the form of the clay a bit. Process is pretty compelling for me.

Making art during a pandemic
Making art during the pandemic.
This is 38 x 36", all hand sewn. The white and yellow fabrics are cotton, the green and blue are wool, and the rest is window screening. Counties and rivers are sewn by machine,as are zigzag borders on world and California. The rest is hand stitched with needle and thread.
